Is your site mobile-friendly? It matters now more than ever

You may remember how, in early February, we talked about the ‘Mobile-Friendly‘ tag that Google had introduced to mobile search results. The deadline is fast approaching that, if you haven’t taken that information on-board, you could soon see a significant dip in your mobile traffic.

The Time is Nigh – Go Mobile or Go Home!

Okay, that heading may be (slightly) too extreme, but the point should be clear – if your website isn’t mobile friendly by April 21st 2015, you’ll miss out on more than just an attractive label, but on rankings, traffic and sales. When we previously discussed the mobile-friendly tag, we highlighted the importance of pro-actively taking care of your website’s performance on mobile platforms and how that could improve both your appearance and your performance in mobile search. Have you addressed it? Go ahead, do a quick Google search for your business with your mobile. We’ll still be here when you get back…done? If you’ve got a ‘mobile-friendly’ tag, you should be set for smooth sailing. Not got it? Then, as far as Google is concerned, your site still isn’t up to their standards for mobile optimisation; you should probably consult a digital professional at the earliest convenience.

We know there’s far too much of a bad habit amongst some Search Engine Optimisers for catastrophising changes like these beyond all reasonable measure. Fortunately, the word on these changes comes straight from the proverbial horse’s mouth. The Google Webmaster Central Blog recently released a blog-post with information on these changes. The specifics of which are that:

Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results.

There you have it. That’s your deadline to get your site mobile-friendly. April 21st 2015. Put it in your calendar and get it memorised. If you’re not careful, it’ll make a lovely ‘wooshing’ sound as it goes flying by.
